Quite recently HMRC have been having a purge on companies that sell online (ebay, amazon etc) to ensure they are paying the correct taxes. Many of these businesses did not register for VAT, either due to them being based outside the UK so they didn’t think they needed to or because they were under the VAT threshold initially but then went above it.
HMRC are investigating more and more of the businesses through their Online Selling Compliance Team based in Aberdeen. They are being assisted in these investigations by ebay and amazon and other online sales channels.
If you have received contact from this team (usually via email from onlineselling.compliance@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk) then we can help. Whether HMRC have completed their investigation and sent you a bill and you need time to pay or whether they have made first contact.
We deal with online selling compliance team regularly and have many contacts there and we have acted for many overseas clients (mainly Hong Kong and china based) as well as UK based online sellers.
